We are proud to have such a young and talented athlete like Liam Dunkerbeck in our team. Son of 42 x World Champion Björn Dunkerbeck, the 13 year old boy got on board very early. In Starboard we see the importance of getting kids into windsurfing as early as possible. We have a new board in our range designed for kids in the waves. Named after this young grom the board is called: Starboard UltraKode Liam Dunkerbeck Pro Model. Read the interview with Liam below.
How did you start windsurfing?
I started windsurfing with my dad in Fuerteventura in the lagoon in shallow water. When I was 4 years old I was also wave surfing.
What are your hobbies beside windsurfing?
My biggest hobbies are surfing and skateboarding. When it´s flat water I like to SUP (StandUpPaddle) with my dad.
Who is your trainer and do you have a person you look up to?
My trainer is my dad because he knows a lot about this sport and he gives me tips to try new things.
How is a “normal day” in your life?
A normal day for me is going to school and after that I go surfing, windsurfing or skateboarding. It all depends on the conditions.
You competed in the PWA Jr. Wave event in Pozo. How was that experience and which board did you use?
I love competitions because there are a lot of kids. I have so much fun with them both on and off the water. I also learn a lot of things from the pro´s. I was using my Starboard UltraKode Liam Dunkerbeck Pro Model.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would that be? And why that place?
I really love were I live here on Gran Canaria. Because there are good waves to surf and strong wind to jump. Another favorite place I like is Maui.
Biggest dream for the future?
I really want to combine windsurfing with surfing on the top level. That is my dream!
Favorite music band/artist?
With my dad I really like to listen to AC/DC or pop music.
Why should other kids start windsurfing?
Because it´s a wonderful sport!
Of course I admire my dad, but I really like Philip Köster because he does everything he wants with his equipment. His moves are incredible!
In surfing I like Julian Wilson and Kelly Slater.
Which moves are you practicing most now when you are windsurfing?
At the moment I’m practicing the backloop and perfecting the forward loop. In speed sailing I managed to pass 30 knots. I really like slalom windsurfing too!
