In the Foil Slalom category, Blanca Alabau also had a strong showing, finishing in third place, making this event one to remember. After a great performance on fin, Matteo Iachino was pushing hard on the foil and finished in 4th place.
Slalom X
In the Women’s fleet, Sarah-Quita Offringa absolutely dominated and was dedicated to claiming the 24th World Title. After winning back-to-back eliminations it was clear that she has the title within reach. In the end, Sarah-Quita Offringa is the 2024 Slalom X World Champion which makes her 24x World Champion. In the Men’s fleet, the competition was extremely high and all the top riders were fighting for the podium places. After many tight battles on the course, Matteo Iachino won the 2024 Fuerteventura Slalom X World Cup and claimed the 2024 Slalom X Vice World Title. Sarah-Quita and Matteo were using the Starboard iSonic.
Matteo Iachino about his Slalom X Vice World Title:
“I am super happy being able to finally win Fuerteventura on fin. It was my goal many times and it’s the event I still didn’t win and probably the pinnacle of fin racing and being able to finally win it is a dream come true. I also became Slalom X Vice World Champion and I am really happy about it. Being there in the top 2 spots for almost ten years is a great achievement for me.”
Foil Slalom
Our Starboard rider and reigning Slalom World Champion, Blanca Alabau delivered a standout performance at the Foil Slalom World Cup in Fuerteventura, securing a solid third-place finish. In the Men’s Fleet, Matteo Iachino was attacking the top places. However, due to multiple technical issues and high competition, he missed the podium and finished in solid 4th place. The Foil Slalom championship is still open and he will come back stronger at the next PWA stop. Matteo and Blanca were using the Starboard X-15.
Blanca Alabau about her 3rd place in the Foil Slalom:
“I am very happy with my third position and I’m looking forward to the other events because I think I can do it better. I was feeling super good with my gear even if I received the foil super late so I had to trim everything in the last minute. The Starboard X-15 was working great, sail was working great so I’m very happy with everything. It was a great event, we had wind every day and I think the judges made a really good call calling the first two days of foiling and the last one. The level was super high so every mistake would cost you some positions but still like this I was feeling super good with my racing and my mindset.”
Matteo Iachino about his 4th place in Foil Slalom:
“The 4th place on foil left me a bit disappointed. I entered the last day with all the chances to be able to win the event and for sure be on the podium. My port tack clam cleat released in the first semi-final of the day putting me in the losers’ final. In the second semi-final, I had a problem with the foil, almost crashed and couldn’t control anything. Because of that, I had to settle for the loser final again and lose the podium. With the stuff that happened the last day, I actually finished well because I could have even dropped out of the top 5. A 4th is still a solid result and the championship is fully open now.”
