Hi Ryu, tell us a bit about yourself. How old are you, where do you come from, which discipline is your favorite and which which is your home spot?
My name is Ryu Noguchi. I’m 17 years old, and I’m a wave sailor from
Omaezaki, Japan.
Tell us more about the conditions at your home spot. Is it easy to progress? Can it be a challenging spot?
Omaezaki is an incredible place to improve your windsurfing skills. Many of Japan’s top wave sailors practice here, and it’s produced several world-class athletes. It’s a challenging spot with very dynamic conditions. Sometimes, the wind blows over 40 knots, the waves are big, and other times, there’s no wind and waves at all. I feel very lucky to have been born and raised in such a perfect training ground.
When did you start windsurfing and how did you discover this sport?
I started windsurfing when I was 8 years old. My first competition was in Japan when I was 12, and I still remember the excitement of winning. That experience made me want to keep pushing myself further in the windsurfing world.
Your main focus is on wave discipline, did you also try other, for example, freestyle? If yes, did you enjoy it?
Yes, I’ve tried freestyle, and it’s definitely challenging, especially here in Japan. Freestyle helps improve my wave sailing skills because it builds control and creativity on the water. Although it’s difficult, I enjoy it a lot and find it very rewarding.
You attended several PWA and IWT events last year. How is it to compete with the best in the world and be part of the World Tour?
It’s an honor to compete with the world’s top athletes. Last year, I finished 7th in the Pro Men’s Class at the World Cup held in Omaezaki, which was a proud moment for me. I also won the U18 World Title for 2025. Competing at this level motivates me to keep improving, and I’m excited to push even harder this year.
What are your plans and ambitions for 2025?
My goal for 2025 is to rank at the top in the U21 class and break into the top 20 in the Pro Men’s Class overall. This year, I’ll also be featured in a windsurfing movie filmed in Japan. It will showcase the challenges and successes of my journey on the World Tour, along with the pure joy of windsurfing. I can’t wait to share it!
Who is your biggest supporter?
My family is my greatest supporter. My father, who was a professional windsurfer himself, gives me invaluable advice, and my entire family is always there for me, whether I’m competing or training.
What advice would you give to a young windsurfer who wants to join the competition one day?
I am 17 years old now, and my goal is to become a world champion. Windsurfing is an incredibly fun and exciting sport. You will face challenges and experience failure at times, but the most important thing is to never lose the joy of it. Stay passionate, keep practicing, and donʼt be afraid to push your limits. I look forward to seeing you out there competing one day and letʼs share the thrill of windsurfing together!
