Flax Balsa is an innovative technology using natural uni-directional flax fibres to add stiffness instead of carbon fibres, combined with an end-grain balsa bottom sandwich and a PET foam deck sandwich. A high performance, full sandwich construction that reduces the use of toxic PVC.

Designed from the ground

Lightweight boards designed from the ground up as our lowest carbon-footprint boards. Natural end-grain balsa covers the bottom of the board, providing it with its overall stiffness and reduced weight. The full sandwich deck uses natural uni-directional flax fibers with carbon stripes to reinforce and stiffen the most stressed sections.

Wave models add a full-perimeter Carbon-Innegra rail band for extra strength.

HONEYCOMB Properties

By turning the balsa grains vertically within the sandwich structure, Starboard’s innovative end-grain sandwich connects the top and bottom faces with millions of vertical, honeycomb-like pillars.

The result is significantly higher mechanical properties than conventional petroleum-based PVC:

3x shear modulus | 3x tensile strength | 20x tensile modulus | 2.75x compressive strength

NATURES WONDER MATERIAL

Wood Technology, introduced by Starboard back in 1995, weighed a kilo less than the best boards at the time. Today, Flax Balsa continues the innovative push to use more natural materials in the most high-performance full-sandwich boards.
Flax fibers, nature’s carbon fiber, are used in Starboard’s Flax Balsa boards along the rails and on the deck for Kode FreeWave and on the deck for Ultrakode, A.I.R, CarveIQ and the Foil boards. It brings added stiffness. Crisp and responsive on the water, yet smooth and comfortable: Flax Balsa is a truly unique technology with a totally new feel.

FLEX OPTIMIZATION

Along the rails on the A.I.R and UltraKode, we’ve added extra-light uni-directional carbon stripes to further stiffen the board between the back foot and the mast track.

SICOMIN BIO RESIN – GREENPOXY 33

We use GP33 plant-based bio resin from Sicomin which has half the carbon footprint of conventional, petroleum-based epoxy resin while maintaining a clear, high performance laminate with excellent U.V. resistance.

EPS CORE – 15.5 G/CM³ DENSITY

Shear resistant, fused and moulded individually to fit each and every Starboard mould to minimize waste.
